Description

A soft, buttery vanilla cake with dramatic swirls of black and purple, perfect for Halloween festivities.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups (350 g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk (or whole milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • Black gel food coloring
  • Purple gel food coloring
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 23 tbsp milk (for icing)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 10-cup Bundt pan thoroughly with butter and flour (or baking spray with flour).
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry mix. Divide the batter evenly into three bowls: Leave one plain (white or orange-tinted), tint the second black, and tint the third purple.
  3. Create the Swirl: Spoon layers of each color into the Bundt pan, alternating between them. Use a butter knife or skewer to gently swirl through the batter a few times for a marbled effect (don’t overmix).
  4. Bake: Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Add the Icing: Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth and slightly thick. Drizzle over the cooled cake. Optional: sprinkle with edible glitter, candy eyes, or Halloween sprinkles for extra spookiness.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
  • Do not overmix the batter when creating the swirl.
  • Feel free to customize the colors for different occasions.
