Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ cup melted butter (for coating)
  • 2 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)
  • 2 tbsp pearl sugar or coarse sugar (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk, water, sugar, and yeast. Let rest 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add egg, softened butter, and salt. Mix in flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Punch dough down and divide into 12–15 equal balls.
  6. Roll each ball smooth, then dip lightly in melted butter.
  7. Arrange close together in a greased square or round baking dish.
  8. Cover and let rise another 30–40 minutes, until puffy.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Sprinkle dough with sugar or pearl sugar before baking.
  11. Bake 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Brush with extra melted butter after baking for extra softness.
  13. Serve warm and pull apart at the table.
