Description

Creamy homemade hot chocolate served in decorated holiday mugs dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, topped with marshmallows, whipped cream, candy canes, and crushed peppermint.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 150 g melted dark chocolate (for mug decoration)
  • Christmas sprinkles (red, white, green nonpareils)
  • 3 cups (720 ml) milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream (optional for richness)
  • 150 g semi-sweet chocolate (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 23 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp peppermint extract (or more to taste)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Mini marshmallows (for topping)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes (for topping)
  • Whole mini candy canes (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Decorate the Mug Rims: Melt dark chocolate in a bowl. Dip the top rim of each mug into the chocolate. Immediately dip into Christmas sprinkles. Let the chocolate drip slightly for that pretty effect. Place mugs in the fridge for 5 minutes to set.
  2. Make the Peppermint Hot Cocoa: In a saucepan, heat milk + cream until warm (not boiling). Add cocoa powder + sugar + salt, whisk until dissolved. Add the chopped chocolate, stirring until melted and smooth. Turn off heat, stir in vanilla + peppermint extract. Taste and adjust sweetness or peppermint as desired.
  3. Assemble the Holiday Cups: Pour hot cocoa into each decorated mug. Add a handful of mini marshmallows. Top with a big swirl of whipped cream. Sprinkle crushed candy cane on top. Add two whole candy canes as garnish. Optional: dust with powdered sugar for a snowy look.

Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness and peppermint flavor according to your preference.
  • For a richer cocoa, include the heavy cream.
  • Store any leftover hot cocoa in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.
