Description

A classic Southern banana pudding recipe, creamy and delicious with layers of bananas and vanilla wafers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups milk (whole milk is recommended for richness)
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste for depth)
  • 4 medium bananas (ripe for optimal flavor)
  • 1 package vanilla wafers (gluten-free wafers if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups of milk, 1 cup of sugar, 4 large eggs, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened, about 10-12 minutes.
  2. Once thickened, remove from heat and let cool for about 15 minutes.
  3. In a serving dish, layer custard, sliced bananas, and vanilla wafers. Repeat until ingredients are used up, finishing with custard.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  5. Serve chilled, optionally garnished with banana slices and whipped cream.

Notes

  • Can be prepared a day ahead for better flavor.
  • Use ripe bananas for the best taste.
