Description

A delicious and easy-to-make Cinnamon Streusel French Toast Bake that combines the flavors of cinnamon and cream cheese for a delightful breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (14–16 oz / 400–450 g) brioche or challah bread, cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (55 g) brown sugar
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened (optional)
  • ¼ cup (50 g) sugar (for cream cheese layer)
  • 1 large egg yolk (for cream cheese layer)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract (for cream cheese layer)
  • ½ cup (65 g) all-purpose flour (for streusel topping)
  • ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar (for streusel topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for streusel topping)
  • ¼ cup (60 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed (for streusel topping)
  • Whipped cream (for serving)
  • Maple syrup or caramel sauce (for serving)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish with butter. Spread half of the cubed bread evenly in the dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla until smooth and creamy. Spread this mixture evenly over the layer of bread cubes. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread layers, pressing gently so all pieces soak up the custard. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best texture.
  4. In a small bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the soaked bread before baking.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set. Let rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  • Feel free to add nuts or fruits to the streusel topping for extra flavor.
  • This dish can be served with various toppings like whipped cream, maple syrup, or caramel sauce.
