Description
A delightful and easy-to-make Chocolate Mousse Layer Delight that combines rich chocolate cake layers with fluffy vanilla mousse and a glossy chocolate ganache topping.
Ingredients
- Flour: 1 ½ cups (190g)
- Sugar: 1 ½ cups (300g)
- Cocoa powder: ½ cup
- Baking soda: 1 tsp
- Baking powder: 1 tsp
- Salt: ½ tsp
- Eggs: 2
- Buttermilk: ¾ cup
- Oil: ⅓ cup
- Hot coffee (or hot water): ¾ cup
- Vanilla: 1 ½ tsp
- Heavy cream (very cold): 2 cups (500 ml)
- Powdered sugar: ½ cup
- Vanilla: 2 tsp
- Cream cheese: 100 g (softened)
- Dark chocolate (chopped): 200 g
- Heavy cream: ¾ cup (180 ml)
- Butter: 1 tbsp (optional)
- Chocolate curls / shavings: for topping
- Chocolate truffles / malt balls: for topping
- Whipped cream swirls: for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F.
- Mix all dry ingredients in one bowl.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla, then whisk.
- Slowly pour in hot coffee until the batter is thin.
- Bake in two 22cm pans for 25–30 minutes.
- Cool completely, then slice each layer in half to create 4 thin layers.
- Beat cream cheese until smooth.
- Add cold heavy cream and begin whipping.
- Add powdered sugar and vanilla, then whip until soft fluffy peaks form.
- Chill the mousse until assembly.
- Heat cream until steaming, then pour over chocolate and let sit for 1–2 minutes.
- Stir until silky and add butter if using.
- Let the ganache cool until thick and spreadable.
Notes
- This recipe is flexible; you can use homemade, boxed, or leftover cake.
- Ensure the heavy cream is very cold for the mousse to whip properly.
- Chill the mousse filling until ready to assemble for best results.
